ON MY OWN

EPONINE
And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no one to go to
Without a home, without a friend,
Without a face to say hello to.
And now the night is near
Now I can make believe he's here.

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head.

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone, I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me his world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known!

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own.

WORK SONG/LOOK DOWN

PRISONERS
Look down, look down
Don't look 'em in the eye
Look down, look down,
You're here until you die

CONVICT ONE
The sun is strong
It's hot as hell below

PRISONER
Look down, look down,
There's twenty years to go

CONVICT TWO
I've done no wrong!
Sweet Jesus, hear my prayer!

PRISONERS
Look down look down,
Sweet Jesus doesn't care

CONVICT THREE
I know she'll wait,
I know that she'll be true!

PRISONERS
Look down, look down,
They've all forgotten you

CONVICT FOUR
When I get free ya won't see me
Here for dust!

PRISONERS
Look down, look down
Don't look 'em in the eye

CONVICT FIVE
How long, oh Lord
Before you let me die?

PRISONERS
Look down, look down,
You'll always be a slave
Look down, look down,
You're standing in your grave

JAVERT
Now bring me prisoner 24601
Your time is up
And your parole's begun
You know what that means.

VALJEAN
Yes, it means I'm free.

JAVERT
No!
It means you get
Your yellow ticket-of-leave
You are a thief

VALJEAN
I stole a loaf of bread.

JAVERT
You robbed a house.

VALJEAN
I broke a window pane.
My sister's child was close to death
And we were starving.

JAVERT
You will starve again
Unless you learn the meaning of the law.

VALJEAN
I know the meaning of those 19 years
A slave of the law

JAVERT
Five years for what you did
The rest because you tried to run
Yes, 24601.

VALJEAN
My name is Jean Valjean

JAVERT
And I am Javert
Do not forget my name!
Do not forget me,
24601.

PRISONERS
Look down, look down
You'll always be a slave
Look down, look down
You're standing in your grave.

VALJEAN
Freedom is mine. The earth is still.
I feel the wind. I breathe again.
And the sky clears
The world is waking.
Drink from the pool. How clean the taste.
Never forget the years, the waste.
Nor forgive them
For what they've done.
They are the guilty - everyone.
The day begins...
And now lets see
What this new world
Will do for me!

Les Miserables quote:

All these heavens are silly. God is a monstrous mith. I shouldn't say that in the Moniteur, of course, but I whisper it among my friends. Inter Pocula. To sacrifice earth to paradise is to leave the substance for the shadow. I am not so stupid as to be the dupe of the Infinite. I am nothing; I call myself Count Nothing, senator. Did I exist before my birth? No. Shall I exist after my death? No. What am I? A little dust, aggregated by an organism. What have I to do on this earth! I have the choice to suffer or to enjoy. Where will suffering lead me? To nothing. But I shall have suffered. Where will my enjoyment lead me? To nothing. But I still have enjoyed. My choice is made. I must eat or be eaten, and I choose to eat. It is better to be the tooth than the grass. Such is my philosophy. After which, as I tell you, there is a grave-digger--the pantheon for us--but all fall into the great gulf, the end; finis; total liquidation. This is the vanishing point. Death is dead, believe me. I laugh at the idea that there is any one there that has anything to say to me. It is an invention for nurses: bugaboo for children: Jehovah for men. No, our morrow is night. Beyond the tomb are only equal nothings. You have been Sardanapalus, or you have been Vincent de Paul--that amounts to the same nothing. That is the truth of it..."
