Preface
I may take a while to respond to eemail sent to this account. If it's urgent, try my main account, General Wesc.

As you are here, however, I may as well tell you stuff. Note that this profile is long and rambling. It was initially constructed for a profile contest where one category was 'longest'.
It won.

General Wesc 101
Firstly, I am General Wesc, former Moderator, former Plot Board Member, present Plot Writer.
I first joined eCritters back in early 2002--I think it was February. It took me a while to become known as the omniscient Wesc, but after a fair bit of Sophism I managed to acquire fame and popularity.

My real name is Luca Kaceem Butler Masters, and I use that in a number of places. I also sometimes go by my initials, which--as you may have guessed--are LKBM.

At this point, some of you may be wondering what the initials LKBM stand for. In fact, I will probably get eemail from people who saw them here and want to know what they mean. Because of people like that, I developed quite a reputation as the supermean guy. I would call people stupid when they asked such questions. I would also give random people items.

Later, however, eCritters filled with OwlManAtt and OMA wannabes who made me seem incredibly nice by comparison. Yay me!

Automation

Anyhoo. . .being lazy, I quickly tired of giving out items manually. For a while I would grab a huge number of item ids via View Source, regex the URIs to the give action, and manually add names as new user joined. Eventually I started using a Javascript to visit hundreds of the command URIs at once.
But being really lazy, I still wasn't happy. I decided to put my ten years of programming experience to good use.

Eventually, I developed a Perl script that would check for new users every five minutes, and send them an item. This was very useful, but still had a problem: I had to manually provide a list of item ids, and update that list every couple days. A trivial thing to fix, but I didn't for quite some time.

Of course, this wasn't enough. On the old eCritters, large shops and large inventories were a major pain, as each item was listed separately in the shops and nothing was paginated. Stocking a 3000-item shop was unbearable. I had written some Perl scripts to help parsing multi-megabyte quickstock.phps. On the new eCritters, I wrote scripts to archive and delete my eemail when the page got too big (it wasn't paginated before). I wrote scripts to download entire forums (something I had also done with the old RR).

I spent a lot of time at school--away from my autopelting abilities--so I started on a messaging system. This system has grown to include more and more stuff, but, ironically, still doesn't handle autopelting. In fact, it doesn't do much at all:
* Heal all my pets on command (from before Strawhert Wands)
* Make all the shopkeepers happy (from before Strawhert Wands)
* Post to forums (experimental, not done)

This script however, grew beyond messaging and autogiving. Vandalism on FAQs drove me to make a 'watchlist' function. This allows me to log (to a file or with eemail notification):
* When people login and out
* Someone's eem over time
* Events in my other accounts (not yet implemented)

Eventually, it will likely also include autohealing or auto-Strawhert Wanding, but there are issues with this: it would require giving a Wand to the user in question, using it, and giving it back. Hardly a safe process.

Because the script is running on my 'General Wesk' account, that's where people generally send their thank yous and interrogations (y did u giv me a item?), so I also made the script forward any eemail (as well as all other events) sent there.

These three functions (autogiving, watchlist, and messaging) are all run on General Wesk, though the script is named 'Commander Wesc'. Someday I may switch it to my Commander Wesc account. Someday.

More recently, I've constructed a couple scripts running on my local server. These are the Forum Browser suite and the eC Tunnel.

The Forum Browser is a pair of scripts, a server and a client.
* The server continuously checks the eCritters forums for new topics or replies, archives them in a concise, unparsed (eeCode stored as eeCode) XML format, and logs the update to the changelog. This runs whenever I'm using eCritters, and sometimes when I'm not.
* The client is activated whenever I follow a link on the changelog. It parses the XML archive (eeCode is parsed to HTML because Elinks doesn't support CSS), and the change is removed from the changelog.

For a while, I was buying well over ten pages of items per day. Or maybe it was over a hundred pages. Anyway, I was buying a lot of stuff. Stocking things one page at a time was too slow. So I wrote an autostocker. At first it was all borky and wasn't stocking everything. Now it works properly, though it's still a bit bleh. It has the shops hardcoded (if($itemname eq "this"||$itemname eq "that||...) extending for over 3000 characters), but it beats doing it manually.
I also modified this script to make a targetted autogiver. I tell it the user to give to, the item name, and the count. It's much neater because it doesn't have lame stuff hardcoded in, but it still has a few minor bugs. thankfully, these bugs haven't resulted in my giving away or discarding my Death Rock.

Here's a (very) partial list of scripts I've written for eCritters:
* Old eCritters eemail archiver
* Old eCritters quickstock parser
* Old eCritters shop parser
* Old eCritters forum archiver
* Autogiver for new users
* Messaging system
* Watchlist

* Forum browser (client, server)
* Forum archive viewer
* Forum post converter
* Item giver
* Desmilifier (for use during the 2005 April Fools Day smiley attack)

* ecforums1.user.js - A Greasemonkey script to highlight/hide eCritters' forum topics by specified users.
* eemail.user.js - Greasemonkey script to add checkbox deleting of eCritters' eeMail.
* ec.forum.viewer.pl - View all forums at once.
* ec.topic.search.pl - Search for topics by a given user.

Languages
My primary language has traditionally been C++, but I use Perl for scripting a lot. I have limited experience or better in a fair number of languages (programming and markup):
* C
* C++
* Perl
* Ruby
* LISP
* Scheme
* Prolog
* Astarte
* C#
* ColdFusion
* Brainfuck
* 8088 Assemby
* SQL
* QBasic
* Javascript/ECMAscript
* PHP
* HTML
* XHTML
* CSS
* XUL
* Java

But most of those I don't really know. I've merely written stuff in them.

Operating Systems
I mostly use Debian GNU/Linux, but I started out on DOS 2 (and Deskmate), later moving to DOS 6 with Windows 3.11, and eventually Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP Home, with a brief sidestep into OS/2 (3.2, I think).
I've used Red Hat Linux, but Debian 0wnz. On school computers I've used NT 4, 2000 Pro, XP Pro, and Solaris 8.

Instant Messenger
I use Jabber. Through Jabber, I use the other major networks as well, but I prefer Jabber. You should too. Please consider downloading a Jabber client and trying it out. It will let you use AIM, MSN, YIM, and ICQ all in the same program, but it's even better if you can convert all your friends to Jabber and just use your Jabber ids.
My favourite client is Psi, but myJabber is also nice if you use MS Windows. I actually mostly use Bitlbee these days.
Jabber/b] [email protected]
AIM/b] genwesc
ICQ/b] 704690
YIM/b] genwesc
MSN/b] [email protected]

Websites
I have had a bunch of websites, but the only one who really need concern yourself with is Wescnet, my primary homepage. You may also wish to read my blog, but I don't post stuff there very often.

Wikipedia
I am an editor on the Wikipedia. I have accounts on at least ten different language Wikipedias, and have edited quite a few more, though usually only to add interlanguage links to connect articles in different languages about the same thing. Here's a list of most of me English Wikipedia edits.

Schooling
I recently graduated from East Carolina University. It's a party school, though I never party. I majored in computer science with a double major in philosophy. Interestingly, nearly ten percent of the philosophy majors at ECU are actually computer science majors doubling in philosophy.
I was homeschooled up to college.

Music
I like a fairly wide variety of music, including Punk (old school, second wave, and some of the modern pop punk), industrial rock, a little techno, pop, musical scores, rock from 1950-today, and various other stuff.
A few good bands:
* KMFDM
* ohGr and other KMFDM spin-offs.
* Vandals
* Anti-Flag (More)
* Hanson
* Offspring
* Less Than Jake
* Ataris
* Misfits
* Lord of the Rhymes
* Donovan
* Dr. Hook
* The Beatles
* Simon and Garfunkel
* The Arrogant Worms
* 'Weird Al' Yankovic
Most bands just have a few really great songs that I like so a list of good songs would probably be more sensible than a list of bands.
Only buy indie music.

Web Design
Standard web design is vital for our continued freedom and to protect accessibility to disabled users. That's why I use Galeon and Mozilla Firefox. Using Internet Explorer encourages sloppy, non-standard (and thus inaccessible) web design. By increasing the market share of Gecko-based web browsers I am showing web designers everywhere that accepted web standards need to be supported.
It's also infinitely more secure than Internet Explorer. If you've ever had any spyware on your computer, IE was probably largely responsible. Here are some reasons to use a Gecko-based browser:
* Better CSS level 1 and CSS level 2 support than Internet Explorer.
* Better HTML 4.01 support than Internet Explorer.
* Better DOM support than Internet Explorer.
* Better PNG support than Internet Explorer.
* Embedded pop-up blocking
* Better (stronger and more configurable) privacy controls than Internet Explorer.
* More adaptable user interface (via skins and CSS selectors) than Internet Explorer.
* More Free
* More cross-platform support
* More secure (The United States Department of Homeland Security has issued an advisory recommending that you do not use Internet Explorer)

Sidenote
At one point in time, I had over 1 000 pages of items in my inventory. Then Leif accidentally deleted everyones inventory while I was on vacation.
I now have many thousands (over 900 000) of items once again, and Leif has not backed up the database for a long while. Scary.

Contests
I've run a number of contests over the years. In fact, the first post of the contest forum was mine. I think my post (which was to eCG) was what finally prompted the creation of the Contet Forum. Less than a day after I posted my contest (still running, by the way), the Contest Forum was created, and my contest post was moved there and topped.
It remained topped for many, many months.

If you have any suggestions for contests I should run, send them along. after all, you're not going to be winning prizes from contests you run yourself. Have me run them and you'll have a chance to win.

Contests from Old eCritters
* Contest Announcement (won by trillian, still running; first post!)
* Win 10,000 eem (Over 3,000,000 in prizes!) (a contest to get us in the top three on TWG--we failed) (See also)
* Decypher for 1,000 eem (won by chena, prize increased a hundredfold)
* Decypher for 1000 eem. (won by Uyanga)

Users
There are a lot of sucky people on eCritters. Luckily, however, there are some really cool ones too.

If you're upset that you're not on my best users list, comfort yourself with the belief that you'd have made the 'utterly cool' list had I made one. (Though in actuality, people who get pissed off about not making the list would be more likely put on the 'petty fool' list.)

Fan Club
Everybody loves me. Except the many gowks who hate me instead.
* LuckyStar (First marriage proposal; first obscessed fan)
* A Secret Admirerer
* General Wesc./General Wesc2
* Bruised (Occasionally says she hates me the least or something to that effect.)

There was on group on old eCritters dedicated to me: General Wesc's Admirers. On the new eCritters, there have been two or three fan clubs made. Nightwolf278 made one. So did Aaronrules, I believe.

Awards
People love the Good General. Here are a few awards that have been given to me--usually to my primary account, General Wesc:
